This would be applicable for: Anyone who supervises or manages employees in any investigative units. The objectives of this program are to address the administrative requirements for managing the investigative processes; focus on managing the operations of the investigative unit, and the evaluation of investigative personnel. We will discuss the selection of investigators and supervisors, proper auditing procedures, evaluation of personnel, making impactful changes as necessary for effectiveness, the need to triage cases for assignment as well as investigative techniques. Topics include Fundamental principles of investigations, major case considerations, initial on-scene to follow-up investigations, evaluation of investigators, investigative work, and criminal cases, use of case management principles, leadership, management, and supervision of criminal investigators, case priorities, and many other relevant topics.

The presenter is Lt. Andrew Buell, During his 20-year career with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. Lt. Buell held the following deputy positions: patrol deputy, school resource deputy, federal task force officer (Gang Unit), TAC Team training coordinator and team leader, SWAT operator and team leader. He was a Detective in the following units: Special Victims Unit and Major Crimes Unit. He was a Sergeant of the following units: Patrol, K-9 and Special Victims Unit. He is currently the Lieutenant in the Office of Professional Standards (Internal Affairs). Throughout his career he has been an instructor within the department, for other agencies and at Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Basic Law Enforcement Academy in the fields of SWAT tactics, police bike operations, report writing, investigations, interviewing, anti-bias policing and officer wellness.
