This 2 day course will provide the participants with a step-by-step process for responding to and investigating the most difficult, demanding and often high-profile incidents that may occur within their jurisdictions. This course will emphasize best practices models for responding to and investigating cases of critical incidents most affecting communities, including homicides, multiple shootings/acts of violence, sexual assaults/rapes and unexplained missing children and child abductions. From the initial response, to handling of the crime scene and secondary scenes, to the multiple stages of the investigative process utilizing actual case studies.
Day one includes the planning and needs assessment, the initial response and components and roles of a successful investigative team. This will include in-depth discussions and recommendations on accepted practices for command post operations.
Day two will address the proper managing of the volumes of information and data coming into the investigation to avoid chaos and to help minimize overwhelming the investigative team. This includes the process of initiating the investigation, the value of a thorough canvass, lead development and communications. Recommendations on the complex process of developing and eliminating the vast numbers of potential suspects often associated with high-profile investigations. A discussion on the collection and preservation of evidence, suspect apprehension and general overview of proper interviews and interrogation. This course will provide participants with recommendations on avoiding common mistakes, thoughts on recognizing and taking advantage of opportunities to solve cases and emphasize on the critical importance of team-work.
